Man On an Ice Floe Glouster, 1918

1. One kind to describe a sentimental aspect.
2. Another Kind to express the emotional value of related forms.
3. One kind to diagram associated ideas.
4. Another kind to express physical corporeality of associated ideas conceived in weight and light.

The difference between the tradition and ultra-modern expression.
Tradition takes physical reality for granted. It is considered sufficient to place oneself before an object of nature and record its emotional reaction in terms of related forms. Ultra-modern expression takes the whole scope of many (consciousness) as its field and in the plastic arts has as its object the expression of mental scope in plastic form.
It is therefore obvious that while the means of expression remain the same (colors, cubes, and shapes and textures) the subject is entirely different than heretofore, and as a result the finished expression has a very different aspect than one is used to expect from a picture. The confusion lies chiefly in being annoyed because the formal presentation is not obviously a chair or a landscape. The answer is that this picture is not a landscape because its subject is not a landscape. Its subject is a mental concept derived from various sources and expressed in terms of weight and light which is the language of visual art.

Cubism is the bridge from percept to concept. A cubist picture is a concept in light and weight of a specific object in nature. It is from that only a step to the expression of a concept of diverse phenomena, sound, touch, light etc. in a single plastic unit. 14th century demanded a plot relationship of subject. 1870 to 1918 demanded plastic relationship of subject. 1918 - demands plastic expression of mental scope.
